Princess Leonor is in Oviedo, Spain to preside over the Princess of Asturias Awards and in her reappearance she was seen wearing orthodontic braces. What does her treatment consist of?

Last Thursday, October 27th, the Spanish Royal Family attended the Auditorio Palacio de Congresos “Príncipe Felipe”, to preside over the traditional Princess of Asturias Awards Concert. There, the heiress to the throne could be seen dressed in fuchsia and very smiling. So much so, that her wide smile showed the progress of her braces.

The eldest daughter of Felipe and Letizia has undergone a treatment to improve the appearance of her teeth. The Spanish magazine ‘Semana’ has consulted an orthodontic expert who has explained what the treatment consists of.

What does Princess Leonor have on her teeth?

The expert, Paula Lammers, has revealed that Princess Leonor wears an “aesthetic bracket orthodontics only in posterior sectors”.

“From the photo they look porcelain, but it may be sapphire”, she also adds, that possibly “they are performing a rescue of the canines using what looks like a passive technique”.

Lammers clarifies that he has been fitted with esthetic orthodontics with a technique called sequential orthodontics.

“The upper right canine seems to be erupting on its own, but the left one does have distal traction”.

    Princess Leonor’s orthodontic treatment

The expert assures that the intervention was performed to place it in the correct position within the dental arch. She explained that this is a way of ‘repositioning’ a tooth that is of great importance, both functionally and esthetically. According to the doctor, the future Queen has undergone a “rescue of the included or retained canines”.

“What they are doing is that the canines, which are in a mesial position, are very close to the lateral incisors. To protect these teeth, they first place the canines distally, in their proper place. And when the canines are in place and the roots of the lateral incisors are no longer at risk, we can continue with the normal bracket sequence.”

It is not known how long Leonor’s orthodontic treatment will last, but it is estimated to last between 12 and 18 months approximately.
