Military sources have expressed their concerns to the Spanish portal Confidencial Digital, stating that the issue of privacy for the future queen has been brought up in the headquarters of the Land, Navy, and Air forces, as well as their respective officer academies.
Princess Leonor’s privacy challenge at military academies
The challenge of protecting Princess Leonor’s privacy at military academies is recognized by both the academies themselves and the Armed Forces.
They are well aware of the difficulties posed by her presence among hundreds of students armed with cell phones.
Despite internal regulations prohibiting the use of phones in certain situations, it has been observed that some military personnel and students are disregarding these restrictions and sharing photos and videos on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
The primary concern is that any image of Princess Leonor, even one captured during routine activities, could be exploited and manipulated to undermine her image as well as that of the monarchy.
There is also apprehension that allegations of favoritism towards the princess and claims of the commanders sparing her from arduous tasks and activities could circulate.
The General Academy of Zaragoza, along with the academies in San Javier and Marin, like other military units, have an intelligence section (S2) that monitors the information disclosed by their members on social media.
Despite efforts to control the dissemination of sensitive images within military academies, it is practically impossible to completely prevent the spread of photographs of Princess Leonor on social networks.
While rules have been established and the information shared on academy members’ social media accounts is monitored, subsequent action can only be taken to issue warnings or remove already posted images.
Moreover, imposing restrictions on cellphone usage in the academies would prove ineffective, as students could easily capture and share photos outside the premises.
Princess Leonor’s privacy is compromised by the difficulty of exercising complete control over the dissemination of images.
