The Infanta Cristina, daughter of Juan Carlos I, has decided to temporarily put her marital negotiations with her still husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, on hold and take a break this summer.
Sources close to the royal family have confirmed the website Monarquia Confidencial this decision, revealing that the signing of the divorce is delayed.
This development has left Cristina in a precarious situation due to two primary reasons.
- Firstly, the strained relationship between her daughter Irene and her father, who have yet to find common ground.
- Secondly, Cristina is currently unwilling to accept the high economic demands of the former Duke of Palma.
Delays and Divorce Negotiations
The separation of Infanta Cristina and Iñaki Urdangarin was officially announced on January 24, 2022, shortly after photographs of Urdangarin with his then-lover, Ainhoa Armentia, surfaced.
The couple, who met at the law firm where Urdangarin worked, has been engaged in prolonged negotiations regarding the terms of their divorce settlement.
Cristina has expressed her willingness to provide him with financial support based on his current lifestyle, but without formalizing any regulations. During this process, Don Juan Carlos, the former king, also offered advice to his daughter regarding the best course of action.
The signing of the divorce agreement has experienced unexpected delays. Initially scheduled for June 5, it was postponed due to Cristina’s focus on organizing her daughter Irene’s 18th birthday party in Geneva.
These delays, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding future living arrangements and financial responsibilities, have added to Infanta’s stress.
The financial demands of Urdangarin pose a challenge for Cristina. She understands the importance of providing financial assistance to support the father of her children, especially considering his precarious circumstances.
Urdangarin’s plans to establish a new residence with Ainhoa Armentia seem nearly impossible with only one income, making Cristina’s financial support essential, at least for the time being.
Despite some dissent, sources close to the family believe it is not surprising that Cristina is helping Urdangarin, even without the explicit approval of her father, Don Juan Carlos, who remains her trusted advisor and confidant.
Throughout the years, Cristina has consistently supported Urdangarin during his most difficult moments.
Royal Family Vacation in Marivent
Despite the complexities of her personal life, Infanta Cristina will be embarking on her annual summer vacation in Marivent, Mallorca, along with her children.
This traditional getaway will also be attended by her sister, Infanta Elena, and her children Felipe Juan Froilán and Victoria Federica, Queen Sofia, and her aunt, Irene of Greece.
Iñaki Urdangarin’s Weekend Getaway
In the midst of the ongoing divorce negotiations, Iñaki Urdangarin was spotted spending a weekend cycling at the Hostería de Torazo in Asturias.
He was accompanied by Ainhoa Armentia, his current partner, as well as a group of friends. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, the couple had the presence of a couple of bodyguards, who ensured their safety during the sporting getaway.
However, it has been revealed that the issue of bodyguards has been a source of irritation for Cristina, as she feels humiliated by their presence, especially when they accompany her and her partner.
As the summer break commences, Infanta Cristina seeks solace and respite from her marital uncertainties.
