According to a new royal biography, King Charles III wants to honor Princess Charlotte, daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, by offering her an important royal title.
The author of the biography, Robert Jobson, claims in his book ‘Our King: Charles III: The Man and The Monarch Revealed’, that the new King of England would be willing to elevate Charlotte from Princess to Duchess.
Article summary
Earlier this year there was a rumor that Princess Charlotte would become the Duchess of Edinburgh, a title that was the subject of speculation after the death of Elizabeth II since there was an agreement in 1999 that established that when Charles came to the throne he would hand the dukedom to his brother, Edward. Six months passed and the press began to speculate that the King had doubts about who to give the dukedom to.
In March 2023, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had fulfilled his promise to his brother and awarded him the Duchy of Edinburgh on his 59th birthday.
However, there was one condition: the title would revert to the crown at the time of Edward’s death. According to Jobson the duchy would conveniently remain “free for Charlotte at a future date.”
What will happen to the Duchy of Edinburgh in the future?
Jobson has revealed that “Charles plans to honor his granddaughter and the change in hereditary law by granting her the title Duchess of Edinburgh, one of the most senior royal dukedoms in the Royal Family, on her wedding day.”
If Charlotte becomes Duchess of Edinburgh she would have the same rank as her siblings, as tradition dictates that they would be named dukes on their wedding day, as with Princes William and Harry.
If King Charles died, it would be up to William or Prince George to decide how to use the title of Edinburgh.
Could Charlotte be Princess Royal?
There is also the possibility that Charlotte could assume the title of Princess Royal in the future. This title is traditionally held by the eldest daughter of the ruling monarch at the time and is an indication of her superior status within the royal family.
Currently, this title is held by Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth. However, once Anne passes away, it will be up to the future King William to decide if he wishes to bestow the title on his daughter. It is important to note that there can only be one royal princess at any given time.
